Samantha Bee was wrong. She did that piece on the men's group Better Men and the book Myth of Male Power and it offended me!
I took Psychology Looks at Women in collage, and it wasn't just about women's oppression, it addressed the inevitable limitations of gender role for both sexes. We know Sam likes her men to be manly, but it offended me when she said "Give them permission to be puss-wads."
Yes! Let them be puss-wads! Get them talking about their feelings instead of flinging poo! Maybe they won't have middle-aged crises, for Christ sake! Did you know the suicide rate is much higher in men?
The first line in the book Myth of Male Power is "The weakness of men is the facade of strength, the strength of women is the facade of weakness." Most men need training to grapple with their feelings, and most women played talking games like tea party when they were girls. Now, my sister and I played cowboys and Indians, but that's not all we played!
The practicality of gender roles is pretty much obsolete. Shame on Samantha Bee for not letting liberation go both ways. If men got in touch with their feelings, maybe they wouldn't be such dicks about sharing power.
